Why do you need medical travel insurance?
Medical care in other countries can be much higher than we’re used to in Ireland. The Irish Times reported:
- In the US, a minor cardiac event could cost €40,000 and a bad heart attack could cost as much as €200,000.
- A stay in an intensive care unit can cost €5,500 per night.
- An air ambulance for repatriation could exceed €100,000 to get you back home.
Specialist medical travel insurance gives you four key benefits:
- Cover for your pre-existing conditions while abroad. We don’t JustCover new medical emergencies. We’ll cover you if you need emergency medical care for existing conditions too.
- Cover for cancellation due to a pre-existing medical condition. You can be covered for up to £25K if you cancel your holiday because of your medical condition or a complication related to it.
- Repatriation costs if you need to be repatriated home in an emergency. These costs aren’t covered by your EHIC.
- Peace of mind that you have comprehensive cover while travelling with medical conditions. You’ll have access to a 24-hour medical emergency assistance if you need if while you're away.
So what’s a pre-existing medical condition when it comes to travel insurance?
A pre-existing medical condition is any medical condition that falls within the medical warranty.
Some of the common conditions we cover include:
- Diabetes: According to census data, more than 300,000 people in Ireland are living with diabetes.
- Heart conditions: Approximately 6,000 people have heart attacks in Ireland each year and heart disease and atrial fibrillation are common.
- Circulatory conditions: Around 6,000 people are admitted to hospital with a stroke each year.
- Respiratory conditions: Around 110,000 people have COPD in Ireland. Another 300,000 people are suspected to be living with it undiagnosed.
- Cancer: Over 40,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Ireland, according to the National Cancer Registry.
It can be hard to manage your illness while you travel. Your routine is disrupted. You may have language barriers explaining what you need. A specialist medical travel insurance provider covers you if you need medical care while abroad, with a 24/7 medical emergency line so you’ll always be able to speak to someone in an emergency. At JustCover we want to help you have a stress-free trip.
What conditions don’t need to be declared?
We ask that you declare any condition that you’ve been diagnosed with and fits within the medical warranty.
If you’ve had a cold or flu but didn’t see a doctor or take medication, you don’t need to tell us. We also don’t need to know about complication-free pregnancies.

How does medical travel insurance work when you're abroad?
We ask that you let us know as early as possible if you need treatment while abroad.
- Keep all documentation: Keep any medical reports, booking forms, receipts, hospital certificates or invoices. These will be needed for your claim.
- Fill out a claim form when back in the Ireland: If you’ve paid any medical costs yourself, you’ll have up to 30 days from the end of your holiday to make a claim. This is where you’ll need to provide your receipts, certificates and booking forms.
- Send it to us: Remember to keep a copy of all the documents.
- We’ll do the rest: Our team will get to work and keep you posted with any updates.

How much does medical travel insurance cost?
With a pre-existing medical condition your travel insurance might be more expensive. There are ways you can make it cheaper. You can pick destinations where medical costs are lower or go for shorter trips. We take into account your personal circumstances, medical history and destination, as well as any activities you plan to do.
How can I reduce my premium when travelling with a pre-existing medical condition?
Consider arranging a shorter trip. Shorter trips mean you’re less likely to claim, as you’ll be travelling for less time. This means a cheaper policy.
Consider choosing a destination with lower medical costs. Cover tends to be pricier when travelling to countries with high private healthcare expenses. The US famously has an expensive healthcare system, so is likely to be more expensive than Europe.
Consider one policy for the whole year. If you plan to travel two or more times within a year, an annual multi-trip policy is typically more cost-effective than securing cover for every single trip.
Frequently asked questions about medical travel insurance
What’s the difference between travel and medical insurance?
Travel insurance and medical insurance serve different purposes.
Medical insurance covers your medical costs while you’re at home.
Travel Insurance policies are designed to cover your expenses if there’s an incident while you travel. They can cover lost baggage, cancellation and delays. It can cover treatment related to pre-existing medical conditions but not all do.
We offer cover for all medical emergencies while you travel. That covers new and existing medical conditions.
How much medical cover do you need for travel insurance?
Some countries, like the USA, have high healthcare costs. An accident there can be expensive.
Even our basic plans cover emergency medical costs of up to €10m.
Is there an age limit on medical travel insurance?
No. During the medical screening we’ll consider people with all ages, with any condition.
We have an age limit of 65 on our winter sports coverage.
How do you declare medical conditions?
You can get a quote online or over the phone. As part of either process, you’ll complete a medical screening.
During the medical screening process, we’ll ask you a few questions about your medical conditions, such as:
- What age were you when you were diagnosed?
- Are you currently undergoing treatment or is any planned?
- Have you had any surgery, inpatient, or outpatient treatment or any referrals or investigations?
- Have you had any unplanned hospital admissions?
Can I exclude a medical condition from my policy?
There are some things you don’t have to tell us.
- A cold or flu you didn’t see a doctor or take medication for
- Complication-free pregnancies
- Contraception.
Otherwise, you can’t exclude conditions. You need to tell us about all pre-existing medical conditions.
How to make sure you’re ‘fit to travel’?
It’s worth talking to your doctor before making any travel plans because they may need to declare you were fit to travel if you need to make a claim.
Does medical travel insurance include cover for medication?
Yes it does. If you lose medication or run out while you’re away, we can help you get and cover the cost of more.
We recommend taking extra medication with you and, where possible, taking it in your cabin luggage so there’s less chance of losing it.
Some medications are treated differently in other countries. If you’re on a steroid or opiate, for example, it may be subject to different restrictions. You should bring a letter from your doctor as well as a copy of your prescription.
If you’re worried, check the Department of Foreign Affairs who can advise on specific rules by country.
Is pregnancy considered a medical condition for travel insurance?
No, pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance. However, any pre-existing pregnancy related conditions are classed as pre-existing conditions, such as gestational diabetes.
We will cover claims for emergency medical expenses, or cancellations until the beginning of the 32nd week of your pregnancy (24th week for multiple pregnancies).
