What is cruise travel insurance and why do you need it?
Last year was a return to record numbers of passengers for cruise lines - over 31 million people took to the seas last year, touring the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and many more destinations in style.
Cruises come with their own unique risks.
Most cruise operators need you to have cruise insurance before you board. That way, if you have a medical emergency while on board, you'll covered if you need to be transported back to the mainland for emergency medical treatment.
And that's not all. It’s estimated that 5% of all cruise passengers will miss the boat at least once in their lifetime!
If you miss a departure, you may have to meet the cruise in the next destination at your own expense. With cruise insurance, the cost of catching up with your ship can be covered by your travel insurance provider.
Having the right cruise insurance means you can focus on enjoying the activities on board.
What does JustCover’s cruise travel insurance cover?
Standard travel insurance does not cover you for cruise-specific events like missed port departures. You need to make sure you have specialist cruise insurance. You will need to declare all the countries your ship will visit or stop at during your cruise. It may help to have your itinerary with you when you’re buying your cruise insurance.
What’s covered?
- Medical expenses and repatriation cover
- Your cruise being cancelled or cut short
- Lost, stolen or damaged luggage and belongings
- Missed port departure cover which includes travel and accommodation expenses to join your cruise at the next scheduled port
- Itinerary changes
- Cabin confinement if you’re asked to stay there by the ship’s doctor
- Unused excursions due to accident, injury or illness
- Cover for the cost of a friend or relative staying with you while you’re being treated or flying out from home to support you if needed.
What’s not covered?
- Claims below the value of the excess
- Trips outside chosen region of cover
- Claims related to events or circumstances that were known to you at the time of buying the insurance or before booking

Frequently asked questions about cruise travel insurance
Do you need special travel insurance for a cruise?
Yes. Most cruise operators will want to see proof of specialist cruise insurance before you board.
A standard insurance policy does not cover cruise-specific risks like missed departure.
Do you need cruise travel insurance for a domestic cruise?
Yes. Even if you’re not leaving the country you will need cruise cover.
Do you need cruise insurance for a river cruise?
Yes. If you go on a river cruise without cruise cover, you won’t be covered for any interruptions or medical events.
Can I book cruise insurance if I’ve already booked my cruise?
Yes. You can book cruise insurance any time before you depart.
Will you be covered if you have a medical emergency on your cruise?
Yes.
As long as you’ve declared all pre-existing medical conditions and the event first within your policy terms, you’ll be covered for a medical emergency.
What if your port visit gets cancelled due to bad weather?
JustCover specialist cruise travel insurance offers compensation if your port visits are cancelled due to bad weather.
If you have a EHIC, do you still need specialist cruise travel insurance?
The Department for Foreign Affairs recommends getting travel insurance even with an EHIC. You should absolutely apply for one if you’re travelling within Europe, but you should also still get travel insurance.
The EHIC card doesn’t cover:
- Cruise delays or baggage - it’s only for medical expenses.
- Destinations outside Europe.
- Your EHIC won’t cover private healthcare. Only state facilities accept the card.
- Repatriation (flying you home from abroad), if medically necessary.
- Things like mountain rescue services if you’re injured in a ski accident, for example.
- Some treatment and prescriptions.
- Personal expenses related to medical disruption, such as delaying your flights or extra nights in a hotel to recuperate.
Does cruise travel insurance cover land holidays?
Yes. Because you add cruise cover to a standard travel insurance policy, you’re covered for your entire trip. Both the land and the sea parts.
Does cruise insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?
All we ask is that you declare all medical conditions at the time you book. You can notify us about any new conditions after booking, just give us a call or add the information online.
Is it possible to cover your entire group?
We offer group policies so you can bring friends, family or anyone else with you. As long as someone is named on your policy before the cruise departs - they’re covered too.
Why is cruise insurance more expensive?
Costs are higher if you need medical treatment at sea as it often requires being moved to the mainland.
Can you add cruise insurance after booking your travel insurance?
If you book an annual policy and during that year you decide to take a cruise, you can add cruise cover to any of our levels of cover.
Always check your policy wording to make sure you’re covered for what you need. If you have any questions please just give us a call.
