What is family travel insurance and do you need it?
Family travel insurance covers up to two adults and eight children on the same policy. As long as you have at least one adult named on the policy, you can cover your family with just one policy. That means, in the event of an emergency, you have just one number to call and one policy number to quote.
It also covers cancellations, trip delays and lost luggage. Make sure you have comprehensive cover when you're creating memories that’ll last a lifetime.
Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs strongly recommends comprehensive travel insurance for your entire family.
- In America, one night in hospital costs $2800 on average. Longer stays, or stays that involve the ICU or surgery, can total hundreds of thousands of dollars. In Europe costs can vary, even with a EHIC card.
- A holiday to Europe for a family of four can cost thousands of euros. Without travel insurance you may lose that money if your trip is cancelled or delayed.
- Smartphones, cameras and other gadgets can cost hundreds of euros. Pickpocketing is prevalent in tourist areas in Europe so protect your device against loss or theft.

Frequently asked questions about family travel insurance
How much does family travel insurance cost?
The price you pay for travel insurance - your premium - is worked out using a variety of factors. We consider:
- How many people are travelling
- Whether travellers have any pre-existing medical conditions
- Your destination
- The activities you have planned
Covering all your family members on one policy can save you time and money compared to covering everyone individually.
Does family travel insurance cover individuals?
Yes. An annual multi-trip family policy covers all the adults named on the policy even if they travel alone. Any children named on the policy are covered if they travel with a named adult.
It can work out cheaper to cover multiple trips under one policy. Give us a call and we can talk you through your options.
How many family members will family travel insurance cover?
You can cover two adults and up to eight children per policy.
Does family travel insurance cover cancellation due to illness?
Yes we do offer cancellation cover because of illness. Please check your policy wording carefully to make sure cancellation is covered.
We recommend taking out travel insurance as close to booking as possible. You are only covered if your trip is cancelled after you buy your insurance policy.
Does family travel insurance cover adult children?
Our family policies cover two adults and up to eight children under 18. If you’re travelling with adult children or with grandparents, it may work better to book a group travel insurance policy.
On a group travel insurance policy you can travel with up to 10 adults.
Should your family get a single trip or annual multi-trip policy?
If you and your family are going away just once this year, a single trip policy will likely save you money.
If you have more than one trip planned it might be worth buying an annual multi-trip policy.
Do you still need family travel insurance with a EHIC card?
Yes you do. Everyone needs their own EHIC card, even if you’re travelling together. The Department for Foreign Affairs recommends getting travel insurance even with a EHIC card. The EHIC card doesn’t cover:
The EHIC card doesn’t cover:
- Cruise delays or baggage - it’s only for medical expenses.
- Destinations outside Europe.
- Your EHIC won’t cover private healthcare. Only state facilities accept the card.
- Repatriation (flying you home from abroad), if medically necessary.
- Things like mountain rescue services if you’re injured in a ski accident, for example.
- Some treatment and prescriptions.
- Personal expenses related to medical disruption, such as delaying your flights or extra nights in a hotel to recuperate.
Are there any age limits on family travel insurance policies?
We’ll cover people of all ages - the adults can be 18, 80 or older. The only age limit across our policies is for winter sports, which has an upper age limit of 65.
Do children need travel insurance?
Yes. Claims are made on behalf of children all the time. Children need cover for medical treatment while abroad. They also need cover for their luggage, gadgets, or ticket if there’s a loss or a cancellation.
